Artist Stories: Danni Smith
We caught up with artist Danni Smith whose design was chosen by The Ivy in the Lanes restaurant. It is the first big commission for this young local artist and she’s delighted to be involved in the project. We asked her about the inspiration behind the design.
“I’ve got an allotment and feel it’s really important to incorporate bee-friendly plants as bees are decreasing in numbers. My snail will be covered in choisya, sunflowers, poppies, roses, michaelmas daisies and even dandelions which people often think of as weeds, but they are an important plant for bees. Each season will be reflected to show how easy it is to grow bee-friendly plants all year round. My sponsor is The Ivy restaurant and during Snailspace they’ll making a few bee-related adjustments to their menu which will be fun.
There are plenty of snails up at our allotment and my kids love it there. They’ve been so excited about this project and came to visit the ‘big snails’ recently while the artists are painting them.
My husband is a snail fan too. He used to be a dustman and would go around saving all the snails that would fall off the bin bags – he’d scoop them all up and put them back in a safe space so they could slowly go about their business. I’m continuing the family snail appreciation with this art work!”
Look out for Danni’s amazing design on the streets in September.
